Two of the oldest tools in physical rehabilitation — still valuable when used with the right timing
Cryotherapy uses cold to help settle acute inflammation, swelling, and pain. Thermotherapy uses gentle superficial heat to ease stiffness, encourage local circulation, and prepare soft tissues for stretching or exercise.
At RehabVet, heat and cold are not “add-ons for show.” They are timed carefully around your pet’s stage of healing. Cold is usually preferred early after injury or surgery; heat is more often helpful for chronic stiffness once acute inflammation has settled. Getting that timing wrong can make swelling worse — so we teach owners when as carefully as how.
These modalities usually sit inside a broader plan that may include manual therapy, therapeutic exercise, dog physiotherapy, or cat physiotherapy.
Cryotherapy (cold)
Helps reduce swelling and numb pain after acute injury, post-operative inflammation, or exercise flare-ups. Common forms: cold packs, ice massage, and carefully supervised cold immersion when appropriate.
Thermotherapy (heat)
Helps relax tight muscles, improve soft-tissue extensibility before stretching, and comfort chronically stiff joints. Common forms: warm packs applied with a protective barrier for a limited time.
Timing is the treatment
The same joint may need cold one week and heat the next. Your therapist chooses based on swelling, heat, pain behaviour, and rehab goals — not habit.
Safe, accessible, teachable
Many owners can continue simple heat or cold routines at home once they have been shown safe durations, barriers, and warning signs.
Best early — when tissues are hot, swollen, or freshly irritated
Cold causes local vasoconstriction and slows metabolism in superficial tissues. Clinically, that can mean less swelling, less enzyme-driven tissue irritation, and meaningful short-term pain relief. It is especially useful:
Right after surgery or acute injury
Once your surgeon or rehab team confirms it is safe, cold packs help control post-operative swelling and discomfort in the first days.
After exercise flares
If a rehab session or home walk leaves a joint puffy or reactive, brief cold application can settle the response before the next load.
Pain and muscle spasm
Cold can reduce nerve conduction velocity enough to ease pain and help break a pain–spasm cycle, making later manual therapy more comfortable.
Joint-focused cooling
Research in dogs shows cold packs can lower temperatures inside peripheral joints. Deeper tissues cool less than skin — so expectations stay realistic, and technique still matters.
Safety first: Always place a thin cloth barrier between ice packs and skin. Limit continuous application as advised by your therapist (often around 10–15 minutes for packs). Never leave a cold pack unattended on a pet who cannot move away.
Best for chronic stiffness — not for hot, freshly inflamed tissue
Gentle superficial heat encourages vasodilation and can make collagenous tissues more extensible before stretching. That is why warm packs are often used before range-of-motion work or land exercises in pets with chronic osteoarthritis or long-standing muscle tightness.
Ease morning stiffness
Senior pets with osteoarthritis often move more willingly after brief, supervised warmth to stiff joints or muscle groups.
Prepare for stretching
Warm tissues generally tolerate gentle mobilisation better. Heat is a primer — stretching technique and dose still drive the result.
Support chronic (not acute) oedema care
In selected chronic cases, improved local circulation can support comfort. Heat is avoided in early inflammatory phases when swelling is still active.
Not a deep heater by itself
Superficial packs mainly affect outer tissues. For deeper heating goals, therapists may instead use modalities such as <a href="/modalities/ultrasound-therapy-for-dogs-and-cats/">therapeutic ultrasound</a> when clinically indicated.
Do not heat acute injuries. Applying heat too early can increase swelling and discomfort. If a joint is hot, red, or freshly post-operative, ask before using a warm pack at home.

Same physiology principles — different tolerance and handling
Dogs usually accept packs readily, especially when paired with calm handling and a familiar mat. Post-operative cold is common after orthopaedic surgery such as TPLO or fracture repair.
Cats may be more sensitive to restraint and unfamiliar textures. We keep applications short, use low-stress handling, and stop if stress rises. Many feline arthritis plans still benefit from brief warm packs before gentle land-based exercise at home.
Simple routines that help between clinic visits — when taught properly
Your therapist may prescribe a home heat or cold routine. Typical principles include: use a barrier cloth; keep sessions short; watch for pale, blue, or overly red skin; never use boiling water bottles or unattended microwaved packs; and stop if your pet becomes distressed. Exact minutes and frequency are individual — please follow the written plan from your assessment rather than generic internet advice.
Foundational comfort tools inside a measured programme
Thermotherapy and cryotherapy rarely stand alone. They make other work safer and more effective: cold after a demanding exercise bout; heat before stretching a chronically stiff hip; cold after underwater treadmill work if a joint flares. We're truly grateful to Dr. Sara, the entire RehabVet team, and especially Xan, who has been exceptionally detailed and patient. The whole team has shown such genuine care throughout Milo's recovery journey. Milo was diagnosed with IVDD Grade 3 in late June 2025. Although he hasn't fully recovered yet, we've seen significant improvement over the past 3.5 months with pain relief treatments, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, acupuncture, and regular exercise sessions. Haru has been going to rehabvet since Nov 2025 to manage his mobility caused by luxating patellar and hip dysplasia. Great team! Brought my dog Bunny in for a consultation because her luxating patella was getting worse. Bunny is an anxious dog so I expected her to be a handful during the consult but she was very calm in the therapists' presence! Having been to several vets and rehabs with my senior Shih Tzu, my experience at RehabVet has been the best. My only regret was not bringing him here sooner when his issues first came up! My very anxious 15 year old kiddo was diagnosed with IVDD and is unable to move all his limbs voluntarily at all times. After the initial testing and diagnosis by Dr. Sara, he has had a few trips to the Hyperbaric O2 Therapy, Laser Therapy, and Electrical Stimulation with massages. Now, I can tell that he is in less pain and is also more comfortable and less anxious. I would highly recommend RehabVet to anyone thinking about it!

Newly renovated place, more conducive for therapy sessions. Therapists are experienced in handling older dogs. Have been sending my 18 year old dog for therapy for more than a year.
The therapists are patient and helped improved my dog's arthritis condition. They taught us how to massage his joints and told us to use heat therapy.
My dog has been coming to rehabs for hips dysplasia at a young age of 2 years old & now is 10 years old & condition did not detoriate - glad we started early.
