Important: Hydrotherapy is not the default recommendation for cats the way it often is for dogs. Many cats find water stressful. At RehabVet we assess carefully, introduce gradually, and never force a cat into the pool or treadmill. If your cat is not a suitable candidate, we will say so clearly and build a land-based plan instead.
Cat hydrotherapy uses warm water — typically via an underwater treadmill (UWTM) or carefully managed shallow immersion — to support low-impact movement, muscle activation and joint comfort. The physics are the same as for dogs: buoyancy reduces weight-bearing, warmth eases stiffness, and controlled resistance builds strength. The difference is behavioural. Cats did not evolve to enjoy swimming, and forcing aquatic work can undo trust and make every future clinic visit harder.

Not first-line for most cats
Land physiotherapy, acupuncture and laser are usually safer first choices for feline pain and mobility.
Suitability only after assessment
Temperament, medical status, wound status and stress response decide whether aquatic work is offered.
Never forced
If a cat panics, we stop. Stress is a clinical outcome — we will not chase “just one more try” at the animal’s expense.
UWTM often preferred when suitable
For cats who tolerate water, controlled shallow depth on a treadmill is usually better than open pool swimming.

We decide together whether aquatic rehab belongs in your cat’s plan.
A minority of cats — selected after veterinary and behavioural screening
Suitable candidates tend to share a few traits: they tolerate handling and novel environments without extreme panic; they have a clear clinical indication where buoyancy or controlled loading would help; and medical contraindications (open wounds, uncontrolled cardiac/respiratory disease, active skin infection, and others) have been ruled out. Curiosity about water at home is a clue — not a guarantee.
Cats who freeze, thrash, vocalise intensely, or remain in sustained fight-or-flight are usually better served on land. That is not a failure of the owner or the cat — it is appropriate clinical judgment.
Possible candidates
Select neurological, osteoarthritis or weight-management cases where the cat accepts gradual water introduction and shows calm coping.
Usually not candidates
Strong water aversion, severe anxiety in clinic, open wounds, unstable medical status, or no clear aquatic advantage over land therapy.

Assessment first. Aquatic sessions are never sold as a package before we know your cat can cope safely.
Gradual, shallow, therapist-led — underwater treadmill often before pool
When we proceed, introduction is slow by design. Cats may spend early visits simply exploring the dry treadmill or standing in very shallow warm water while we read stress signals. Depth and movement increase only if the cat remains coping. Session goals are comfort and controlled steps — not lap swimming.
Gradual introduction
Short exposures, calm handling, and the option to abort at the first sustained stress response.
Shallow water first
We prioritise paw contact and confidence over immersion depth.
UWTM over pool for most feline candidates
The underwater treadmill lets us control depth and speed while the cat practises walking — usually better tolerated than free swimming.
Drying and recovery time
Aquatic bookings include time for showering and drying within the session, per clinic terms — cats leave warm and settled when possible.

Select neurological, osteoarthritis and weight cases — only if water is tolerated
For the right cat, warm-water therapy can reduce joint load while encouraging active muscle use — useful when land exercise alone triggers pain or fear of falling. Typical clinical contexts (always after suitability screening):

Usually no — and that is the correct clinical answer. Many cats are water-averse. We never force aquatic therapy. If your cat shows sustained stress around water, we recommend land physiotherapy, acupuncture and laser instead. A minority of cats tolerate gradual, shallow introduction; only those proceed.
No. Unlike many dog programmes, hydrotherapy is not first-line for most cats. Assessment comes first; land-based modalities are the default starting point unless there is a clear aquatic advantage and the cat copes well.
We review medical history, examine gait and joints, screen for contraindications, and observe how your cat handles the clinic environment and gentle water introduction. Suitability is a clinical and behavioural judgment — not a sales decision. Book an assessment to start.
Expect a slow introduction: settling time, possibly dry treadmill familiarisation, then very shallow warm water if coping looks good. We may not achieve a full workout on visit one — building trust is the goal. If stress rises, we stop and pivot to land therapy.

We're truly grateful to Dr. Sara, the entire RehabVet team, and especially Xan, who has been exceptionally detailed and patient. The whole team has shown such genuine care throughout Milo's recovery journey. Milo was diagnosed with IVDD Grade 3 in late June 2025. Although he hasn't fully recovered yet, we've seen significant improvement over the past 3.5 months with pain relief treatments, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, acupuncture, and regular exercise sessions. Haru has been going to rehabvet since Nov 2025 to manage his mobility caused by luxating patellar and hip dysplasia. I can't recommend RehabVet highly enough! My Happy, a pomeranian with patella luxation grade 3 on her left hind leg and hip dysplasia, has made incredible progress since starting physiotherapy here. Having been to several vets and rehabs with my senior Shih Tzu, my experience at RehabVet has been the best. My only regret was not bringing him here sooner when his issues first came up! My very anxious 15 year old kiddo was diagnosed with IVDD and is unable to move all his limbs voluntarily at all times. After the initial testing and diagnosis by Dr. Sara, he has had a few trips to the Hyperbaric O2 Therapy, Laser Therapy, and Electrical Stimulation with massages. Now, I can tell that he is in less pain and is also more comfortable and less anxious. I would highly recommend RehabVet to anyone thinking about it!

After a sudden incident where my dog started dragging both hind legs, the vet diagnosed him with IVDD stage 2. I decided to try physio at RehabVet, and it was the best decision I could have made. Newly renovated place, more conducive for therapy sessions. Therapists are experienced in handling older dogs. Have been sending my 18 year old dog for therapy for more than a year.
The therapists are patient and helped improved my dog's arthritis condition. They taught us how to massage his joints and told us to use heat therapy.
